Shuttlelift’s New Concept Crane Debuts at AWEA!

Once again, Shuttlelift has responded to the industry’s demands for lifting solutions in the wind power field. A brand new concept of a folding crane is in the final stages of development and was unveiled at the AWEA show in Chicago, earlier this month. Known as the SL100II LDG, the concept will initially only be available on gantry cranes with a 100 ton carrying capacity; the most popular model of choice for wind farm constructors today.

So, why a folding crane? A common situation on many wind farm construction sites is that a gantry’s progress can be hampered by overhead power cables. To reduce the overall height of the crane, simply by removing the retaining pins on each leg and thus folding down the top beams, the gantry is able to pass under existing overhead obstacles, which may have impeded the crane’s movement through the erection site. As the drawing demonstrates, once the top beams have been folded down, the overall height is reduced from a typical 33’ 7” to a profile of just under 16’.

This unique characteristic is a result of discussion with wind farm constructors and is causing a great deal of interest; particularly when using a gantry to lay out wind turbine components prior to erection.

Designers are confident that this new folding gantry crane will be suited to other applications; discussions are being held with main contractors in the construction and manufacturing sectors to establish how they can benefit from such a revolutionary design.
