Re-Usable Pallet Ties Secure Drums, Cartons within Warehouse

Temporary pallet securing techniques are often required to keep goods from moving or falling after operators pick items or as open pallets are transported within the warehouse or to nearby buildings. These techniques include disposable pallet bands, shrink-wrap, metal or plastic strap, tape, and traditional rope ties. Unfortunately, all of these options are time consuming and involve unnecessary material cost and disposable waste.

Instead, a growing number of warehouse managers are turning to a new breed of inexpensive, reusable pallet ties called Ty-Ups that reduce the risk of falling goods and allow for quick securing, and re-securing, of pallet drums, pails and cartons repeatedly over time.

Ty-Up Pallet Ties, manufactured by NY-based Tieco-Unadilla Corporation, are designed with a unique metal hook that self-fastens the cord when wrapped around pallet goods. By holding the hooked end of the Ty-Up with one hand, and wrapping the cord with the other, you lock the Ty-Up into place by tugging the cord through the hook. Time study tests show that these ties are 50% faster to use than other manual ties.

United Stationers, an office furniture wholesale outlet with locations nationwide, uses the Tieco pallet ties to prevent falling cartons in a warehouse bulk rack area. The company purchases approximately 300 Ty-Ups several times over the course of each year.

"The Ty-Ups increase stability in our palletized loads at less cost than tape or stretch film because the ropes are durable and reusable," says LeRoy Howe, a United Stationers shift supervisor. "They take less time to secure a load than stretch wrapping and do not mar the surface of cartons as tape does, which is important to our customers who sell to end users. They are easy to release, which is important to our stock picker operators, who may be pulling from a pallet while elevated 20 feet in the air. And there's no film or tape to cut and throw away."

According to Greg Kirtley, Plant Manager of Sweet Ovations, the company orders approximately 200 Ty-Ups annually and has for the past 8 years. Sweet Ovations provides food ingredients (flavor bases, syrup bases) for refrigerated dairy, food service, bakery, and beverage companies. Ty-Ups are used to ensure the security of column-stacked pallets which need to be moved by forklift from the production area to the warehouse.

“We keep a good supply of Ty-Ups in the warehouse so we can secure corrugated boxes, plastic pails, steel drums and fiber drums all of which are filled with various fudge bases, flavor bases and syrup bases coming out of our production area,” says Kirtley.

Tieco, a manufacturer of industrial and commercial safety products, offers a free trial of the product on request to qualified prospects. Simply state the size and weight of the palletized materials to receive a free sample.
