Graco InvisiPac™ Provides Adhesive Tracking Technology
Graco Inc. (NYSE:GGG) provides adhesive tracking capabilities on its InvisiPac™ Tank-Free™ Hot Melt Delivery System for case and carton sealing applications. Using the system’s advanced controls, packaging line engineers can track and monitor hot melt adhesive consumption.
“Material usage is displayed on a screen and you can reset it at the beginning of a shift,” said Nick Long, product marketing manager, Graco. “If the average amount of hot melt consumption is changing with each shift, then the line manager realizes there may be a problem and can take steps to remedy the situation.”
The system allows production engineers to view current material usage on the user display or download and save files to a flash drive for a historical look at adhesive consumption. Data may be analyzed and graphed to get a visual indication of material consumption over time.
“If adhesive usage is going down, it may indicate that someone turned the air pressure down on the machine, which might result in boxes that pop open,” Long said. “Using too much adhesive would tell you that perhaps an operator saw a box open and decided to turn up the air pressure. Although turning up the volume of hot melt is a logical conclusion, it may not be the right one. There are other variables on a packaging line that might be causing a box to pop open.”
Recently awarded the Gold Visionary Award by the Institute of Packaging Professionals and Packaging Digest, the InvisiPac System’s innovative tank-free design significantly reduces the char normally created by traditional hot-melt systems since adhesive doesn’t spend as much time at high temperatures. Less char reduces nozzle plugging, eliminates the need for constant tank scraping and reduces downtime for maintenance. In addition, start-up times on an InvisiPac production line will be approximately 10 minutes or less, compared to 35 minute or longer start-ups for traditional hot-melt systems that use a tank to heat the adhesives.
The complete InvisiPac System includes a vacuum feed system, in-line melt chamber, heated hose and Graco-designed applicator. Its integrated vacuum system feeds adhesive pellets to the in-line melt chamber. A sensor monitors adhesive in the chamber, and additional pellets are automatically added as needed, based on the demand of the application. With its efficient heat transfer design, the InvisiPac System adhesive throughput capability surpasses other hot melt tank systems. The result is a continuous flow of adhesive during production that significantly reduces the time adhesive sits at temperature. Less time at high temperature means less char, less maintenance and more uptime.
