Transportation Experts to Explore Clean Fuels, Funding & Fleet Technologies at June 24 Conference

Friday, June 19, 2009

HOUSTON, TX — In a continuing effort to address regional air quality issues with practical solutions, transportation professionals, including fleet owners and operators, will gather on Wednesday, June 24 at the Humble Civic Center for a one day conference, Amp Up Your Fleet: 2009 Advancing the Choice, presented by the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) in partnership with Silver Eagle Distributors.

The annual conference, which is open to the public, will feature nationally recognized experts on a variety of topics including clean fuel technology solutions, conservation strategies, and federal funding opportunities for cost-effective emission reduction projects, as well as trends in biofuel production and the latest updates on hybrid technology.

“As our region continues to grow, the need by transportation experts to address air quality issues intensifies,” said Shelley Whitworth, H-GAC Air quality Program Manager. “This conference is meant to provide these leaders, in the private as well as public sectors, an opportunity to learn about the trends, tools and technologies that offer practical solutions in improving the air we breathe. This is a collective effort in which local governments, school districts and businesses are striving to make a difference.”

The conference provides an open forum for more than 130 transportation professionals to discuss challenges and opportunities in improving regional air quality via panels, workshops, exhibits and demonstrations. A showcase of advanced vehicles will be on display as well, featuring retrofitted engines as well as hybrid/electric technology.
Among the featured speakers is Steve Andrews, co-founder of the Association for the Study of Peak Oil- US Affiliate (ASPO-USA), a non-partisan, non-profit research and public education initiative organized to address our country’s peak oil and natural gas energy challenges. Donald McMannes, Mayor of the City of Humble, and Jack Steele, H-GAC’s executive director, will open the conference.

The Houston-Galveston Area Council, through its Clean Cities and Clean Vehicles programs, is dedicated to educating transportation professionals on how clean fuel technologies and fleet maintenance can successfully work to reduce harmful emissions and pollutants. “Education and open discussion are our best allies in making progress toward meeting EPA standards,” continued Whitworth. “Our challenges in improving air quality are many but, by working together, our region is definitely making progress.”
