Toyota Material Handling, U.S.A., Inc. (TMHU), has been named as one of 50 Green Supply Chain Partners in Inbound Logistics Magazine’s annual listing. Chosen for this title because of their environmentally friendly solutions and manufacturing process, the ranking demonstrates Toyota’s dedication to supply chain sustainability. The companies selected are featured in the June issue.

"Inbound Logistics readers have always been concerned about supply chain sustainability. The companies selected as this year's 50 Green Supply Chain Partners, including Toyota, have a long-standing history of driving efficiencies in their customers' operations and an internal commitment to be as lean and green as possible," explained Felecia Stratton, editor, Inbound Logistics.

The Green 50 feature is designed to provide decision support for Inbound Logistics’ readers seeking to do business with sustainable providers. To be eligible for the ranking, companies must provide logistics service with an emphasis on eco-friendly solutions. The listing includes 50 companies, which are categorized based on the services provided.

Environmental Leadership
Toyota’s commitment to the environment runs deeply throughout every facet of the company. From industrial equipment product development to manufacturing processes implemented at Columbus, Ind.-based Toyota Industrial Equipment Mfg., Inc. (TIEM), to support of national organizations like the Arbor Day Foundation, TMHU has always made environmental responsibility a key priority.

Toyota’s commitment is exemplified by a number of initiatives including:

• Achieving zero-landfill status for TIEM’s 870,000-square-foot facility.
• Implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS) at TIEM, along with energy reduction and waste management standards, which have been recognized by the state of Indiana and been ISO certified.
• Reducing the company’s eco-footprint: TIEM was honored with the 2009 State of Indiana Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence due to its success in reducing its carbon footprint in 2008 by 3% or 3.911 tons of CO2 through process improvements and controlling electrical and natural gas usage.
• Curbing product emissions: Toyota 8-Series LPG, gasoline and CNG lift trucks produce 70 percent less smog-forming emissions than current federal standards.
• Improving product fuel efficiency: Toyota is the only lift truck manufacturer in the world that offers a factory-installed Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fuel system option, which is both UL listed, and EPA-CARB certified.
• Using environmentally friendly materials: Toyota’s 8-Series I.C. models, for example, are 100 percent cadmium- and mercury-free.
• Incorporating recycling programs at TIEM.

Toyota continues to explore ways to further enhance its environmental stewardship. The company is working on technologies that reduce environmental impact, including:

• Hydrogen fuel cell lift trucks
• Hybrid lift trucks - The world’s first1 internal combustion hybrid lift truck, the GENEO-HYBRID. Launched by Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO) in Japan last year, the hybrid lift truck combines a 2.5-liter diesel engine, electric motor and nickel-metal hydride battery to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 50%.
