To Support Safety and Health Education, CCHEST Donates $20K to American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

DES PLAINES, IL — The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation recently announced a donation of $20,000 from the Council on Certification of Health, Environmental and Safety Technologists (CCHEST), a Division of the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), to fund the $1,000 annual CCHEST scholarship available to graduate and undergraduate students pursuing degrees in occupational safety, health and the environment (SH&E) or a closely related field.

The name of the scholarship will change each year. The 2009 scholarship was named after Patrick J. Conroy, OHST, CHST, past CCHEST program director and board member. For 2010, the scholarship will be named the CCHEST – Roger L. Brauer Scholarship.

“With the continued support from CCHEST, we are able to once again offer SH&E students financial support for their education, which is important especially during difficult economic times,” said ASSE Foundation Chair Eddie Greer, CSP, OHST. “We are greatly appreciative of companies and organizations who continue to provide funding to our scholarship program by recognizing the value of educating future safety and health professionals.”

Roger L. Brauer, PhD, P.E., CSP, of Tolono, IL, an active ASSE professional member for 30 years, is a member of the ASSE Central Illinois Chapter and the ASSE Engineering Practice Specialty. In addition, Dr. Brauer is a past recipient of ASSE Society Fellow Award, ASSE’s most prestigious award, and a two-time recipient of the ASSE Charles V. Culbertson Outstanding Volunteer Service Award. He served as the executive director for BCSP from 1996 – 2009.

Students who apply for the ASSE Foundation 2010 scholarship program by December 1, 2009 will be considered for the CCHEST – Roger L. Brauer Scholarship. Scholarship recipients will be announced in April 2010. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be enrolled full-time (12 hours or more per semester for undergraduate students and 9 hours or more per semester for graduate students) and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in occupational SH&E or a closely related field.
