Save-Ty Yellow Products – A Feel-Good Company

With every order that leaves Save-Ty Yellow Products, Dan Gentile sends a letter that asks for a rating on the product and delivery, everything from the attitude of the driver to the condition of the packaging on arrival.

If the rating is not a 9 or 10 in each category, Gentile asks that he be called personally.

“I get two or three calls a year,” said Gentile, the founder, owner and president of Save-Ty Yellow Products. The company, with offices in West Chicago and its factory in Rockford, Ill., makes and sells “safety products to protect employees, facility, products and machinery from impact by forklifts,” its website said.

The products prevent injury and damage, Gentile said. The best thing is that the products can save not only money and lost time due to injury, but even lives.

“I wanted a feel-good company,” he said.

The company makes guardrails, overhead door track protection, end of aisle and rack protection, handrails and gates and driveway gates, among other products. It is a broad line, Gentile said. For example, instead of one style of guardrail, Save-Ty offers three.

He is always looking for new products, sometimes prompted by a customer need. The most recent is Collision Awareness, for which Save-Ty is the exclusive distributor and which has motion sensors and warnings for both a forklift operator and pedestrian.

“I can put guardrails up, but I can’t put a guardrail around a person,” Gentile said.

With warehouses larger and forklifts faster, avoiding collisions becomes increasingly important.

In the Chicago area, the company installs its products. But they are easy to install, and some buyers do the installation themselves, or have a dealer do it. The company has 55 employees in its plant, five in the office and 18 field reps. He is a hands-on owner, answering the phone and doing quotes every day. He founded the company in 2003 after working in the industry for 12 years. Save-ty Yellow is a specialist in safety products, he said, setting it apart from mezzanine companies that make safety products as a sideline.

The company sells to distributors. With $250,000 in inventory, products ship quickly. And orders are growing. A new dealer will try out a single product for a job, and then the next time order two or three products after “they see how we do,” he said.

Despite the recession, sales were 17 percent ahead of the year before, and he expects further growth.

“We see an additional 25 percent growth this year. We actually see that coming in orders for the first quarter,” he said. “Slowly but surely we’re moving across the United States with the distributors we have. The number of distributors grew last year by 21 percent.”
