Right Brush, Right Application

Wednesday, February 1, 2012

Would you like to know one of the most frequently asked questions that I receive?

Here’s an example: we’ll call him, Rich. He has a sweeper for a large machine shop with steel cuttings and shavings that need to be cleaned. He uses a nylon main broom, that he has been using, and was not satisfied with the longevity. He emailed and asked: “What is your best broom, I need your best!”

Example II: Bob writes that he has a factory that has a floor with build-up of oil and grease. He is using poly brushes on his scrubber. They are not scrubbing as well as he had hoped. He writes, I need your “best” broom.

Both examples are instances where the wrong broom is being used for the wrong application. I intentionally left out the machine brand, such as Tennant, Advance, etc., because many times it is as, or more important to use the proper brush.

An 8 D.R. (double wire) main brush would be my choice for the first example. Where as a steel broom would hold up best against steel.

In the second instance, I would submit that a grit brush would be the solution.

For your convenience is an application I assembled and have used for many years.
SWEEPING BRUSH SELECTION GUIDE

The Hi-Gear power-sweeping brushes are built around a heavy-duty core, with staple-set tufts aligned in spiral rows. This design places bristles on the floor at all times to increase vacuum efficiency and improve pickup characteristics.

Select the double row design for HEAVY DUTY SWEEPING or GENERAL PURPOSE SWEEPING or a high-density (also called “full-fill”) single row design for DUSTY SWEEPING.

HEAVY DUTY SWEEPING – MAIN BRUSHES

Crinkle Wire – double row design with cutting action for extra duty sweeping of compacted dirt. Recommended for dry, low, dust sweeping on unsealed surfaces. Preferred for sweeping higher temp debris.
BRUSH LIFE: Fair to good

Poly and Wire – double row design – for slightly encrusted, medium to heavy loose soilage and light dust conditions. Good hopper loading performance. Not for sweeping higher temp debris (use Crinkle Wire).
BRUSH LIFE: Very Good

Union and Wire – double row design – for use on dry, slightly encrusted soilage. For light dust conditions.

GENERAL PURPOSE SWEEPING – MAIN BRUSHES

Nylon – double row design – Our most popular fill for sweeping most soilages and surfaces. Nylon offers longer bristle life and good hopper loading performance. For medium dust conditions. Not for wet sweeping (use poly).
BRUSH LIFE: Excellent

Poly – double row design – for sweeping most soilages and surfaces. Poly is economical and it retains its stiffness when wet. Used for medium dust conditions. Not for sweeping higher temp debris (use Nylon).
BRUSH LIFE: Good to very good.

Union – double row design – for sweeping most soilages and surfaces. For medium dust conditions.
BRUSH LIFE: Fair

Nylon Patrol – double row herringbone design – for sweeping large indoor and outdoor areas at higher speeds. The “V” shaped pattern of bristles gives superior hopper loading of sand and larger items.
BRUSH LIFE: Excellent

DUSTING SWEEPING – MAIN BRUSHES

Union and Wire – high density, single row design – combines Wire for cutting of lightly compacted soilages with Union fiber for heavy dust conditions.
BRUSH LIFE: Fair to good.

Nylon – high density, single row design – for sweeping severe dust and loose soilages. Recommended for most surfaces. Longer bristle life. Not for wet sweeping (use double row Poly).
BRUSH LIFE: Excellent

Poly – high density, single and double row designs – available for select models. For loose soilages.
BRUSH LIFE: Good

SIDE SWEEP BRUSHES

The Hi-Gear side sweep brushes are built on a rugged marine type plywood block for extra long life. Staple-set bristles are arranged in a broad flare design with a wide sweeping face that provides easy access to corners, walls, and gutters.

Flat Wire – for heavy-duty sweeping and cutting of mud and compacted soilages. Preferred for outdoor sweeping and for higher temp debris.
BRUSH LIFE: Good

Nylon – for dry sweeping on most surfaces. Longer bristle life. Not recommended for wet sweeping (use Poly).
BRUSH LIFE: Excellent

Poly – for general purpose sweeping. Poly is economical and it retains its stiffness when wet. Not for sweeping higher temp debris (use Flat Wire or Nylon).
BRUSH LIFE: Good To Very Good

The Hi-Gear Company offers both cylindrical and disc style scrubbing brushes. Tufted bristle is staple-set on a heavy duty, chemical resistant plastic core or block.

Cylindrical brushes use a full-fill design that keeps bristles on the floor at all times. The herringbone pattern used on most scrubbing brushes directs solution to the center of the scrubbing path.

Disc brushes are built with a multi-row pattern, with bristle density and stiffness that meets industry standards for scrubbing performances.
