Influential Retailers to Speak at 'U Connect' Supply Chain Conference

Friday, April 3, 2009

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J.— GS1 US announced that supply-chain executives from CVS/pharmacy, Lowe’s, Macy’s and Wal-Mart will take the stage at its annual U Connect Conference® in the Retailer Panel Keynote, with Kevin Coupe of MorningNewsBeat.com moderating.

Taking place on Wed., June 3, the panel will be the highlight of the first general session of the conference, which will be held June 2-5, in Orlando, Fla.

The keynote panelists will share how they’re reducing costs and modifying their operations to survive and thrive in the current economic downturn. They will support the conference theme, “Transforming Your Supply Chain for Extraordinary Times,” as they draw on their experiences, successes, and observations of what makes for a successful supply chain.

The executives are: Peter Longo, president of Logistics for Macy’s; Mike Mabry, executive vice president of Logistics and Distribution for Lowe’s; Gary Maxwell, senior vice president of International Supply Chain for Wal-Mart; and Ramesh Murthy, vice president of Inventory Replenishment for CVS/pharmacy.

“This will be my third U Connect Conference,” said Maxwell. “Supply-chain professionals who are looking for guidance on how to run their operations more efficiently and more effectively will hear practiced solutions that can be implemented in the near term.”

Coupe edits MorningNewsBeat.com, a daily retail-oriented online newsletter with more than 25,000 global subscribers from all segments of industry. He also heads Coupe Communications, a production company that specializes in business videos designed to help companies define and share big ideas with employees, customers and clients.

Another U Connect spotlight on retail will be “Retailer Roundtables,” which will give suppliers the opportunity to meet with retailers and discuss opportunities to improve their supply-chain processes. Companies scheduled to participate include Ace Hardware Corporation, Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES), Associated Wholesale Grocers, Best Buy, CVS/pharmacy, Lowe's, McLane, SUPERVALU, Wakefern, Wegmans Food Markets, and Winn-Dixie Stores.

As previously announced, Bruce Richardson, chief research officer of AMR Research, will deliver the Conference Keynote, on Thu., June 4. He will share learnings and insights from the 2009 version of the annual AMR Research Supply Chain Top 25 list, which will have been unveiled just the prior week.

Several major retailers and suppliers are on the planning committee that drives the program for U Connect, which is co-hosted by the Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Solutions Association (VICS).

The program is focused on business-oriented tracks: Efficient Distribution of Goods; Efficient Order to Cash; Supply Chain Visibility and Traceability; Sustainability; and Item Identification and Setup. Another track will address GS1 Standards. Conferees can take advantage of hands-on workshops, ask-the-expert sessions and other offerings, in addition to three plenary sessions and 60 breakout sessions.

The conference will be held at the Orlando World Center Marriott Resort, beginning on Tues., June 2 with pre-conference seminars. The main conference begins Weds., June 3. Exhibits will be open Tuesday through Thursday.

Early-bird discounts end on April 15.
