Showpower 2010 in Nashville, Tenn., will dedicate all its Undercar University seminar sessions on Friday, March 19, to helping technicians learn more about emission-controls diagnostics and repairs.

Trainers from leading catalytic-converter manufacturers will provide 41/2 hours of information designed to avoid comebacks and improve a shop’s profitability. In Emission Controls Part I, Charles Pantano, emissions certification director at Eastern Catalytic, discusses catalytic-converter history, design and durability, along with federal EPA regulations. Greg Fetner, Cherry Bomb product manager for catalytic converters, takes on the P0420 code, which covers catalytic-converter threshold efficiency – and a lot of heartburn for some technicians.

In Emission Controls Part II, Gary Stamberger, MagnaFlow Exhaust Products director of training, will cover fuel-trim effects on catalytic converters. The efficiency of the converter is directly related to the mixture of gases entering it. This class explains fuel trim and its effects on the converter with specific examples and diagnostic techniques for getting the car fixed and out the door. Bill Kaminski, CATCO Catalytic Converters vice president of product development, follows with a discussion on the differences between emission dyno testing and OBD-II testing, and California’s stricter emission-controls regulations that may become the standard for federal EPA regulations.
