When it comes to the main broom and broom chamber, the basic idea or design is very similar from machine manufacturer to manufacturer. So, if I talk about, let’s say, the American Lincoln Model 3366XP Sweeper, the main broom chamber area is similar to the PowerBoss SW9XV.
The PowerBoss SW9XV is similar to the Tennant Model 6650. There are certain components that every machine has in common. They all must maintain a certain vacuum pressure in the chamber to accomplish 100% vacuum effort. To accomplish this fact they all must have:
- #1 Left and Right hand side skirts. Even the main broom access door must have some type of dust skirt so the vacuum is not compromised.
- #2 The rear skirt, located behind the main broom. This skirt also acts as a barrier so debris is not passed over and left behind.
- #3 Skirts and seals that go around the opening where the debris hopper comes to meet. This, again, allows the vacuum motor to have a consistent vacuum flow beginning at the broom chamber up through the different chambers in the hopper.
- #4 Finally, the main broom, the most important component. It is always a cylinder tube broom that extends the width of the machine to maintain a certain sweep path. Sweep paths are as small as 26” and as wide as 60” width. Of course, I am referring to rider machines. The walk behind sweeper could go as small as 20” width.
The main broom, as well must always be level and within adjustment. When the main broom is to be replaced it should always be readjusted to allow for the longer bristle. Generally, the instructions from manufacturer to manufacturer may very slightly, however, the overall procedure is the same.
- #1 Start the main brush
- #2 Lower the main brush for 15 to 20 seconds while keeping a foot on the brakes to keep the machine from moving. This will lower the rotating main brush.
- #3 Raise the main brush.
- #4 Stop the main brush.
- #5 Move the machine off to the side to observe the pattern. A polish mark will remain on the floor.
- #6 The pattern should be 2.0 to 2.5 inches.
- #7 To increase the width of the main brush pattern, turn the main brush down pressure knob counter-clockwise. To decrease the width of the main brush pattern, turn the main brush down pressure knob clockwise. If the main brush pattern is tapered, more than 15 mm (0.5”) on the end than the other, adjust the taper at the drive end of the brush.
- #8 Loosen the bracket mounting bolts.
- #9 Turn the taper adjustment nut counter-clockwise to increase the pattern width at the brush drive end, and clockwise to decrease the pattern width at the brush drive end. Tighten the mounting bolts.
- #10 Check the main brush pattern and readjust as necessary. Then adjust the width of the main brush pattern.
