ABB Selects Exel To Manage Fulfillment and Assembly Services at North American Logistics CenterMonday, April 6, 2009
WESTERVILLE, OH — Exel, the North American leader in supply chain management and a Deutsche Post DHL company, recently began order fulfillment and assembly services for ABB, a leading power and automation technology company. Operations take place at ABB's new North American Logistics Center in Groveport, Ohio, southeast of Columbus.
This centralized operation will help ABB improve inventory and order accuracy, on-time order preparation and ultimately service its customers more effectively. Exel associates handle products from the ABB Low Voltage Products business, which includes industrial control products, circuit protection devices, automation controls and components, terminal blocks, contractors, motor starters, control relays and timers. Value-add services also provided by Exel include assembly, kitting and final product configuration.
"Our primary goals for the North American Logistics Center are to improve product lead times and availability, as well as the ability to late-finish products," said Michael Plaster, Senior Vice President and General Manager, ABB Low Voltage Products. "With this business model and associated scalability, we can provide significantly increased service levels while improving operating costs."
The solution for ABB was developed in close partnership by Exel and DHL Global Customer Solutions, which is a customer relationship management organization that leverages specialized industry teams to manage customers' supply chain solutions from a single source. As part of the solution, Exel collaborates with its sister company, DHL Global Forwarding, to transport products to the Logistics Center from multiple ABB manufacturing plants in Europe. Products will also arrive from locations within the United States. Once at the 240,000-square-foot facility and prepared for distribution to customers, shipments will be transported to locations throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.
As the operation begins, ABB will utilize 108,000 square feet of the space available at the Logistics Center. The remaining space provides an opportunity for ABB to expand its business operations in the future. Approximately 80 jobs will be created at the facility when it is fully operational.
This is the first time Exel and ABB have worked together in the United States. DHL is ABB's leading global logistics service partner.
