New truck app: simply get there better

Monday, July 21, 2014

The Android version of PTV Navigator is now available in the Google Play Store

The Android version of PTV Navigator is now available to buy in the Google Play Store – ensuring that the proven truck navigation solution is available to everyone.

With its move to the Google Play Store, the professional truck navigation solution – previously reserved for companies and large customers – can now be used by private individuals, too.

Michael Hubschneider, Product Manager for the PTV Group, is pleased about the new service offering: "Anyone who has their own fleet or drives a truck now has access to this good, reliable navigation solution." Users only need a Google account. The download and installation are automatic. The full version can be used free of charge for fourteen days before the customer has to decide whether they want to buy the software.

Interface with telematics providers
The interface between the program and major telematics providers is particularly important. This means that external subcontractors, for example, can transfer a specific route to their navigation device using an app for a fleet management system. The navigation takes into account restrictions relevant to trucks, such as the truck dimensions, transporting hazardous materials and tunnels. The system essentially plans routes which are based on the needs of the respective vehicle types: for trucks it avoids U-turns, narrow streets and routes which are closed off to trucks, and takes into account options for areas where there is limited access, such as pedestrian zones.

"Truck" or "fleet"?
Both PTV Navigator truck and its somewhat cheaper alternative, PTV Navigator fleet, are available via Google Play. The fleet version is sufficient for vehicles to which truck limitations do not apply, for example transporters. PTV Navigator truck supplements the routes with up-to-date information for trucks, such as roads which are closed and bridge heights. PTV Navigator truck is available for €119; the fleet version for €79. Hubschneider sums up the advantages of this app as follows: "We are giving everyone the advantages of comprehensive truck navigation: our customers save time, money and CO2 because they choose the correct route from the start. Arrival times will therefore become significantly more reliable."

Navigation and ergonomics
The system offers the comfort familiar to users of car navigation solutions: precise, visual and spoken directions, 2D and 3D navigation, realistic signposts, junction displays and automatic smart zoom, which zooms in on the map for difficult manoeuvres. Further features include speed limits displayed with warnings, automatic switch between day and night mode and automatic location detection in tunnels.
